Sarturday on DVD: Waking Ned Devine

Waking Ned Devine is a comedy set in Ireland, perfect for viewing now as St. Patrick's Day is next Wednesday. I've got a fair amount of Irish blood coursing through my veins, so anything from the Emerald Isle typically piques my interest.

I loved this nutty movie. After poor Ned Devine dies of the shock of winning the lottery, comedy ensues as several people from his village develop schemes to claim his prize. You can watch the trailer here.

Here is a list of other films set in Ireland, of which I would also recommend Dancing at Lughnasa and The Crying Game. But neither are comedies, so be warned.

If you know of another movie set in Ireland that I should see, please leave me a comment, thanks!

  1. I'm going to have to add that one to my Netflix list. Sounds funny. I've got some Irish blood as well and my husbands grandma is 100% Irish. I've always said that if someday I get to do any oversea's traveling, my first choice would be Ireland. It intrigues me.

A movie that is coming to mind is "The Secret of Roan Inish", but now that I type that, I can't remember if it's set in Ireland or Scotland. Whatever the case, it's very good and one of both of my daughter's favorite movies.

  2. ok I can't remember the name but Carole and I saw it in Ventura, it has Hillary Swank in it and her husband dies early in the movie and he was from Ireland so she has to go back to deal with his family and not only is it gorgeous to look at, its quite the chick flick.....dang what's it called? It's only about three years old. I'll keep thinking of the name.
Oh...thanks for the package! It arrived a week ago but I am swamped with school. LOVE the book!

  4. I don't know about Irish movies....But have you read any of Marian Keyes' books? She has a whole bunch about Irish sisters. I loved each and every one.

When I get more than a minute break from my demanding teenagers, I'll check out these flicks.

Happy St. Patty's Day to you.

  5. I love that movie. Anytime you get to see naked old Irish guys running around...That is just good comedy.
Another great movie in the spirited senior citizen division is Second Hand Lions.
    I love that one too.
