T-Shirt Tote

I have a number of graphic tees that I still really like, but have no intention of wearing again. I needed to clear them out of my closet, but I didn't want to give them away. A while back I came across a blog tutorial on making a tote out of an old t-shirt. I wish I could remember where I saw it, but if you just Yahoo! "t-shirt tote," you will get several options.

So, here is my attempt. Besides the thread continually breaking while I was machine sewing the seam at the bottom (which turned a 2 minute project into a 15 minute project with a small amount of cursing), it was so easy. After sewing the bottom, I just cut the sleeves off leaving the original serging intact. And that was that.

This was not a regular boxy t-shirt, but there are plenty of tutorials on how to make a tote out of those. I'd also like to try making a drawstring bag out of an old t-shirt. Then, instead of taking up space in my clothes closet, my neat old graphic tees can go take up space somewhere else.

Oh, and then I gave the cap sleeve scraps to Valerie and Andrew to use as kerchiefs for their puppies.

  1. This is a really good idea. I have tons and tons of old race t-shirts (I'm a runner) that could easily be turned in to totes to use for groceries (they wouldn't be anywhere near as cute as your tote!)
The hard part? Finding the time to make them!

  2. Awesome use for an old t-shirt. Now I'm going to dig through my drawers and see what I can find. You can never have too many bags.

I was just telling someone that I NEED to learn how to sew. :)
