Oscar and Lucinda had been on my list for a long time, over a decade probably. It came out the year after The English Patient which launched Ralph Fiennes into the spotlight. The wonderful Cate Blanchett also stars.
This film is based on a novel, which I now want to read, you know, to get the whole story. Basically, Oscar is an oddball Anglican priest with a gambling problem, and Lucinda is an unlikely heiress with a gambling problem. If you stop there, it may take you over a decade to get around to watching the movie. But there is more to the story. They are not loud raucous gamblers. They are quiet and intense and wow, the performances were great.
You may find that the story turns out a bit oddball, but you will be glad you watched Mr. Fiennes and Ms. Blanchett bring the characters to life.
What have you been watching lately?
